    • A friend on the road

      NPR - National Public Radio

      16 July 2004

National Public Radio. Just go to the low numbers on the radio in the rental car and there it will be. It can be any time of day, and you will know it when you find it. Maybe it is the "N" in NPR... Susan, Scott, Garrison, or the Car Talk guys. Maybe it is the local programing. Maybe it is even the "beg-a-thons." A good friend that is always with you!

    • Punctuated by their songs

      Hall and Oates

      14 December 2004

From the time I first heard them through my wall in the dorm freshman year, to unrequited love punctuated by their songs, through the 30 years that they have been known as "blue-eyed soul", Darryl Hall and John Oates have made music that has been wonderful. Yes, they have been successful, and yes, some of their songs are very commercial, but they have given me great pleasure. And they have often returned to the Philly roots to cover a classic. May they continue to make music for many years to come!

    • A beacon that stands out

      Chick-fil-A

      03 December 2007

A beacon that stands out in the vast wasteland of fast food joints on the US's interstate highway system! We Northern "Yankees" have only been introduced to the excellent service and good food. And I will go out of my way for the diet lemonade, which is made with lemon juice... imagine chicken sandwiches made with pieces of chicken and lemonade made with lemons! And as a frequent traveler to Houston, TX, I get a belly laugh from their billboards featuring cows pointing out that chicken sandwich is a cows best friend. Good food and humor too.

    • A relationship that has lasted

      Esquire

      19 March 2008

Can you have a relationship with a magazine? And a relationship that has lasted for 30 years? Well, with Esquire I can answer yes. Even as I passed in and then out of its demographic sweet spot, the magazine has remained relevant to me and to my life. I won't spend $10K on a watch, but it helps me recognize quality. I won't be able to cut the same striking figure in the suit that its models do, but gives me great ideas on colors and fabrics. Simply on John Mariani's recommendation I will run, not walk, to try a new restaurant. The profiles of interesting people, the fiction and the Dubious Achievement Awards are all part of it. A Tom Junod profile, or a Scott Rabb story may get the first look, but each issue is read cover to cover. And at the risk of sounding far less than PC, I do look at the pictures! Esquire will shape the next suit, the next meal, and likely the next vote. So a relationship indeed as well as a true Lovemark!
