    • A role model for me and my family...

      Sir Edward Fox

      23 June 2004

Character actor Sir Edward Fox has been knighted by the queen, but I've always considered him noble because of his commitment to giving great performances, to being a gentleman, and to preserving his England as he sees it. He is both an activist and a role model for me and my family. Of course, he's also completely beautiful, and wears his age well.

    • Balance and peace

      Frank Lloyd Wright

      23 June 2004

Frank Lloyd Wright designed architecture which gives me a sense of balance and peace. His work can make me gasp with pleasure, particularly the private homes which seem to nestle into the environment and add to its beauty.

    • Waiting for me

      Barnes & Noble

      15 August 2004

When I arrive, my favorite chair is waiting for me, and there are smiling people to help me find the books I need. Nobody bothers me, and when I'm ready, I can go have a latte. What's better than that?

    • Hundreds of children who understand the magic

      Where The Wild Things Are

      29 August 2004

It is impossible to underestimate the magic of sharing this little book with children. I teach fourth grade, and have never had a class of children who didn't love the story. By the way, don't forget to look at the characters' little jaunty feet, usually tilted up on the heel. I suggest this to all, along with my hundreds of children who understand the magic. We'll eat it up, we love it so! Max won't say no.

    • We both grin back

      Mercedes Benz

      29 August 2004

I own a 1969 Mercedes 230. This little old sedan is a joy and delight! She is a chocolate brown, starts when you crank her, and catches everyone's eye on the way to and from work. She is magical, tiny, sturdy, and has a sense of humor. Whenever people see her, they grin at her. We both grin back.

    • I had wondered...

      Chanel

      02 October 2004

I love Chanel No. 5, and had wondered whether or not the deep, rich scent was too old-fashioned. Then one of my fourth grade students said I smelled better than anybody else in the world. Case closed!

    • I hope our generation isn't the last of the dreame

      Star Trek

      01 December 2005

My husband and I both remember watching the first episode, and now, in our forties, we wonder where the hope has gone. No more Star Trek? I hope our generation isn't the last of the dreamers, buoyed by our hopes for the future of mankind. God bless them all, from Christopher Pike to Jonathan Archer. They give us joy: a rare commodity these days.

    • My life is amazingly different

      Flonase

      05 December 2005

For forty years, I had a dream: to breathe through my nose like a normal person. Enter Flonase! It has given me the ability to do that simple thing, and my life is amazingly different.
