    • They're irreplaceable to me

      Pantofola d'Oro

      13 June 2007

Pantofola d’Oro is Italian for ’golden slipper’. It’s an Italian manufacturer of football boots and leisure footwear. OK, the fact that it’s Italian is already an indication of its high quality and style. But this is truly a Lovemark to me because of its unique combination of a luxury shoe with clear sporting origins. The house was founded in the 1950’s and current designs are still based on the original rugby boots from that time. Mine really feel like ’slippers’ wearing them but in fact they go as well with a suit as with shorts! The shoes are handmade and once they’re worn out you can send them back to Italy to have them resoled. Or you can just hang them against the wall as decoration. Top-level, timeless styling, fine materials, and yet modern and comfortable...they’re irreplaceable to me.

    • VIVA PEDRO!

      Pedro Almodovar

      27 June 2007

Pedro Almodovar is undoubtedly the ’bad boy’ but also the maestro of contemporary Spanish cinema. While his indigenous roots both ecompass cosmopolitan Madrid and the rural countryside, his films are universal in their appeal. Most of the masterpieces he wrote and directed got world-famous. The unconventional way in which he presents class, color, race and gender in all its rich diversity makes his contribution to Spanish culture almost political. He employs the codes of melodrama, and plays with pop culture, popular songs, irreverent humor, strong colors, glossy décor - I sometimes even use ’Almodovar’ as an adjective to indicate a certain style: That’s such an Almodovar interior! He’s renonwned to be a good director of actresses (with Penelope Cruz as his last muse) but I believe he’s at least as brilliant with actors (e.g. Gael Garcia Bernal). Apart from that his soundtracks go straight to the bone. I ’listened’ to ’Todo Sobre mi Madre’ - my personal favorite - several times already with the sound turned on and the TV display turned off.
