Excels in dedication
Korean Air
07 January 2007
Of the thirteen airliners I’ve traveled with, six being European, four being Asian, the remainders being African and Middle Eastern and American, Korean Air excels in dedication of its immaculate cabin service, from preparatory services such as choice of meals and daily journals of every major language to on-the-spot troubleshooting resolved by its well-trained crew.
No reed will match Vandoren's
Vandoren
09 January 2007
For every aspiring clarinet player, Vandoren is the name of assurance. No reed will match Vandoren’s. The sheer richness of tone will make others nod, "That’s a Vandoren".
Home away from home
IKEA
09 September 2007
IKEA is home away from home. Furniture isn’t normally an item to consider taking with you on long haul overseas deployment with frequent redeployment, but, IKEA lets you take your familiar comfort zone to the far corners of the world. Everything is so easy to take apart and reassemble, and say for example, if that new apartment measurement isn’t quite right for your corner bookshelf, you can always run down to the local IKEA store and buy extensions. Thanks to IKEA, the shelf that were once filled with kids’ books are now filled with art books I’ve collected over the years in Europe and the Far East; enjoying a book-haven of their own that growns wider and wider, even though it has been over twenty years since that first single column purchase.
A message without borders
New Zealand Post
24 May 2008
Newborns, dads, moms, daughters, sons, and lovers...life doesn't get any sweeter than that; but, when's the last time you've written a letter to show that you care? We really shouldn't need an ad campaign to tell us that, but, apparently, three little stone tosses from the Kiwi Isles are sending out heartwarming ripples over the Internet. "Send and You Shall Receive" does just that. It warms your heart and makes you think back on life, on family, and generally what matters most in life. In itself a rarity in today's humor-orientated, visually-charged advertisement landscape, the ad has won my nomination for a Lovemark not only for its obviously heartening storyline and perfectly chosen music but for its universal factor; I believe its message is without borders.
Capri-Sonne in every country
Capri-Sonne
23 July 2008
Growing up in Germany, you're bound to have had a sandwich and a Capri-Sonne for lunch as a kid at least once in your school years. It's that common. Hop through a border or two and you'll still find it in neighboring countries, all over Europe. It's so common you'd expect to see Capri-Sonne in every country; but, of course, you don't. Capri-Sonne didn't come out in Korea until about a few years after I got here, and although the silver pouch is covered all over with Korean writing, to me it's Germany all over again.
They've put the R in Rugby
All Blacks
03 August 2008
You may have strength; you may have a team of dedicated professionals; you may even have a kicker by the name of Wilkinson; but, you'll never have the guts and glory as the men in black at the height of their fury. They are the tough, the mighty, the blunt force trauma that eats world titles for breakfast! The pride of a nation, their stubbies are black, you know their names, and so have your parents, 'cause they've put the R in Rugby since AGES - AGO!
All about MTV
MTV
16 February 2009
A huge chunk of my pre-adolescent 80s childhood was all about MTV. Back then George Michael wanted to "touch your body," Whitney Houston wanted to "dance with somebody," and the Bangles urged kids everywhere to "walk like an Egyptian". Rick Astley was a chart-topper, not an internet legend, and everybody was doing the loco-motion to Kylie Minogue, a rising teen star. Auto-reverse was a huge thing for walkmans, nobody had yet heard of Nintendo, and kids at school would talk about MTV's then-awesome show,"Remote Control". Remote Control deserves it's own Lovemark, although it's been forgotten to oblivion. The game show wouldn't be as entertaining today even if the network brought it back, compared to stuff like Jackass, but watching contestants getting dumped in slime and slung off their chairs in "wheel of torture" was beyond any describable level of sweetness for a kid in the 80s.
Hearting something
We Heart It
16 February 2009
For quite a while, in my pool of infinite online digression, Digg had been my goto place online to find the latest in humor, offbeat, and sometimes bombastic news of ginormous (gigantic+enormous, but you knew that :) proportions; but that changed overnight when I discovered WeHeartIt.com Simply put, it has the social vibe of digg minus the geekiness and passive agressiveness aimed at anything closely resembling republicanism, and has the interestingness of delicious or maybe even Flickr's last 7 days page. While some might argue it's just another Found, I would strongly advocate the sweet design and simplicity of "hearting" something you love. Warning: addictive once you get a hang of it.
