A whole new kind of comic
A&O were an Easter gift sent home to me in the USA from my brother stationed in the military in Holland. They were a whole new kind of comic to me, intelligent and funny, and a history lesson, too (how many 8 year-olds in the US know what ancient Gaul is?) I've loved them ever since, bought them for my kids, and brought a couple home from Europe to give to my brother when the table was turned. :)

A sure sign of a great comic
I've read all Asterix comics in Greek in my early teens. I've bought them (again) and read them (again) in my early 20s. I've bought them (yet again) and read them (this time in the original French text) in my late 20s while living in Brussels. Each time I loved them and each time I discovered details and jokes that I had not noticed before. This is a sure sign of a great comic and more generally a great multi-layer, several-degrees reading.

Asterix, the musical
I couldn't agree more. These books gave me a sense of empowerment when I read them as a child. As an adult, I joined a musical group called 'Asterix and the Gauls' and we, like the comic book characters, fought against an oppressor. Our fight was against the dull pop music of the time, not the Romans - and the spirit of the real Asterix and the Gauls kept us going through thick and thin!

That summer I fell in love
One summer vacation my cousin came with his entire collection of Asterix books. There were like 30 different ones. That summer I fell in love with this French character based on the rebellious village that stood against Caesar. His adventures involve a great sense of humour, druids, magic, great characters and also comic historical personalities. I read that summer what I havenīt read in a summer since.
