  • One of my favourite gurus and political satirist

Leunig was one of my favourite gurus and political satirist during my formative years. I tried to get his early books, but they don't seem to be stocked in NZ any more. I most dearly loved the cartoon of a family having a picnic under a streetlight at night, with the dad having entertained his family on his violin. The caption has his son saying, "You're great dad".

  • Almost an admirer

I was always a reader, almost an admirer - until evil things started to happen in the world, and as some pushed, Leunig pulled - too far to the right for me. Many of his recent cartoons have been too overtly divisive and political, bloody even. Please Michael, let's return to the simple poetic messages of hope that always used to characterise your work.

  • Bitter and sweet

Yes Leunig is always close to my life to refresh and support fears and concerns. I use his cartoons with my students at school in health and child studies classes. Michael Leunig is a wise and sincere man who I hope will share many more reflections, both bitter and sweet, in the future.

  • Four of my most treasured books

The soulful Australian cartoonist with the unique vision, a national treasure (in a country that CAN seem like a cultural boneyard to those who don't scratch below the surface). Leunig's magnificent cartoons, with their poignant expressions, whimsical joy and fragile beauty, can break your heart and make you laugh at your own absurdity at the same time, page after page. The Penguin Leunig, The Second Leunig, The Bedtime Leunig and The Travelling Leunig are four of my most treasured books.
