A living history
I love the Olympic Games. On TV, we get a living history of the host country, along with some of their customs. I'm glued every evening watching all of the events. Not all events are predictable. The Williams sister, of tennis fame, got eliminated in competition. The US women's favorite, Gayle Devers didn't qualify and neither did Pappas (both due to injuries), so there ARE plenty of surprises. If the US doesn't have anyone left in a competition, sometimes there is a favorite from another country...like Ana from Mexico ...a favorite in Track and Field, who won silver. And a Canadian won silver in men's springboard diving, as well as the gold winner from China. The list could go on an on. That's why I love watching the Olympics.

No craving
The Olympics Games are a wonderful gathering of events and something that we should get excited about...but don't. At least I don't. For me there's no anticipation, no craving, not even a real interest in the games. In my opinion it is because the Olympics are always branded in the same predictable way, it offers me nothing. There seems to be so many opportunities to connect the "people" to the athletes in order to gain loyalty, support, and in the end a larger and more zealous viewing audience. Also the upcoming games are taking place in Greece, the birth place of today's culture, yet there is nothing as far as an "identity" that pays homage in any way to the greatness of the past. Isn't that what is so wonderful about Athens, its history!? It's like no thought goes into this monumental event at all.

Undermined
The Olympics are passé. The use and abuse of performance-enhancing drugs by most if not all "athletes" that compete, in addition to the acceptance of professional athletes in the games has, I think, undermined everything the Olympics stands for (or rather, used to stand for). Of course, stories of fighting ice skaters and Jamaican bobsledders has also served to lower the Olympics to a cheap tabloid experience. The entire event becomes more a sideshow than anything deserving world class status. It is a shame.

It's nice to have you back
Every four years the biggest sporting event in the world rolls around - The Olympic Games. Olympic spirit, effort and dedication are the values that inspire our athletes from all over the World. And now, after many years, the Olympics will finally return to Greece where it was born. It's nice to have you back... Welcome home to Athens for 2004.
