More of an extension of the users personality...
This is not computing for the masses; it's a connoisseur’s 'brand'. Those of us who use Linux only use it because we truly love it. We love the freedom of being able to make it do, look and behave exactly as we want. No two Linux boxes look alike, and a Linux box is so much more of an extension of the users personality than any other sort of computer. Sure, it can be frustrating at times, infuriating even but this isn’t a superficial relationship. You get over the tough times with Linux and the romance is back on, but you've learnt much more you love it even more.

Gotta love a recursive acronym
One of the few "lovemarks" I can claim to love. Yes, Linux and the Penguin are logos. Banners, mascots, what have you. Logography, Iconography, is Symbology. Truly, all the love I have for what Linux represents really applies, for me, to GNU. GNU's Not Unix. Gotta love a recursive acronym. If you're a nerd like me, that is. And a social movement based on Free (as in Freedom) in software is as good a Freedom movement as any. I boot my Linux box and smile, knowing there is hope in the world - even the virtual world.

A symbol
Linux is a symbol of individuals cooperating in a world project to create a quality product. A simple idea that required vision, leadership, cooperation, and above all talent to give it life.

Linux explained
Linux started in 1991. So it's 13 years old, not 20. Linux' branding (so-called, it was never branding, it was a banner for a movement) is an example of why high-priced consultants often miss the boat. Who would have gone with something named after the creator, which nobody knows how to pronounce anyway? And the logo. Does a penguin say "high performance free-as-in-freedom unix-like operating system"? I read somewhere that a marketing guy eventually did call the penguin a stroke of genius because you could combine it with anything. A penguin with a briefcase = linux for business. A penguin with a shield = secure linux. A penguin in your national costume = your local linux user group.

A lonely one geek project
Twenty years ago it was a lonely one geek project. Now it's a multi-ten-thousand volunteer-developer project which enabled a multi-billion dollar satellite industry whilst promising a free alternative to the developing world's computing needs.
