Lager as I now know it...
Pilsner Urquell was the first golden beer. Urquell is the German word for "source". This source was a new strain of hops stolen from Bavarian Monks and smuggled out of Germany. They produced a beer that was golden, clear and pure - very unlike the dark and cloudy beers of old. The creation of the golden beer coincided with the practice of drinking beer from glasses rather than from earthenware tankards as before. For the first time people could see the beer they were drinking, and it was beautiful.
