Now I really want a pint...

Some years back I worked on the Guinness account at an ad agency. As a Guinness drinker, I loved it, knew others who loved it, blah blah blah. But there was something else - something more sublime about the pint. It wasn't just the surge and settle, the 'perfect pour', the tan head or the tulip glass. We struggled with what 'it' was for some time, until, out of sheer frustration, I popped down to the pub outside the office and ordered up a Guinness. And then, I noticed something...An older gentleman sitting at the end of the bar reading a book had taken note of my order, and almost imperceptibly, gave me an acknowledging nod - like two bikers passing on the street, giving each other a subtle wave. Only then did the idea of a 'Lovemark' truly make sense. In this case, it was Guinness, and the unspoken bond of 'familial' ties.

Ended up writing a whole strategy around the concept of 'Welcome to the family', and developed radio spots that playfully brought the idea of brilliance and family together, e.g.: ANNCR: Way back in 1759, around the time that Arthur Guinness had the genius and foresight to open his first Guinness brewery, his cousin Frank was just starting his own business. HAMISH: Aye, Frank, the building's a beaut, but what'll ya do with it? FRANK: Hamish, this is the very first auto repair shop in the world! See over there? We'll do tire repairs and re-treading. Over here, we'll put in an engine bath and a hydraulic lift. We'll be able to service 4 cars at a time, all with a smile and unbeatable service! HAMISH: It's a grand plan for sure, Frank. But the internal combustion engine won't be invented for another 50 years. And it'll be 127 years until the first gas-powered car even gets patented. FRANK: (long pause) Aye, that's true, Hamish. But just think - by then, I'll have expanded to 2 or 3 shops! We'll have a monopoly! ANNCR: Guinness. Brilliant since 1759. Welcome to the family. Damn, now I really want a pint...

Always time for Guinness

I hate waiting for anything or anyone. Except a pint of Guinness Draught. There's always, always time for Guinness. Just sitting at a bar and watching as the bartender pours me one. The dark liquid rolling around, a surge of bubbles and cream; almost a warning. It's time to set down the glass for the first pause. A few lazy moments to reflect upon the last time I had one. Then the bartender is back for the final pour. Again a moment to let the excitement settle down a bit and it's my turn. I just waited a glorious 4 minutes and I haven't even had the first sip yet. The best is yet to come.

Exactly like my beloved grandfather

Just one thing...when I drink Guinness I feel like when I was child, drinking the foam and after I have my absolutely unique mustaches exactly like my beloved grandfather!

Symbolises wholesome strength

Guinness symbolises wholesome strength to me. I had low iron levels after being pregnant with my first child and drank half a pint of Guinness a day to boost them. It worked! Iron levels to beat all records! Whether it was a fluke or not, I always feel like I am drinking something that is good for me.

Guinness Extra Cold

How do take a brand that’s been around for years, everyone knows what it is, everyone knows how good it is...and change it, make it better, change how it’s consumed? Guinness have done just that. Somehow, it now doesn’t seem right when drunk warm.

It's great theatre

It’s great theatre. I was in Dublin and ordered a Guinness and the performance that went with pulling the perfect pint took fully 5 minutes. This would have been a problem except the barman asked me what I would have to drink while I waited!

Beer of choice

I have never been a beer lover - well, not until I tried Guinness 20 years ago. I don’t think it’s the drink per se that really makes me love it, but there’s just something about the experience that is associated with drinking that dark malty brew that makes it my beer of choice.

I drink Guinness with pride and I always will

Guinness stands for something much greater than just a drink. It resembles a story of Arthur Guinness who created success from nothing. Having an Irish heritage means I drink Guinness with pride and I always will.
