A great key to all solutions
"“We must be the change we want to see in the world” is a very famous quote by Mahatma Gandhi. He gave India the direction it needed for the freedom struggle and that's why they call him Father of the Nation. His principles are called Gandhism and have become an integral part of our life. If we need to succeed and do well in life in a good way then Gandhism is what we need. Gandhism has made its presence felt in every walk of management and is proving to be a great key to all solutions.

Emphasized deep sincerity in simplicity
If Mahatma Gandhi hadn't been India I would have sworn he was from Sparta in Greece. The Spartans too emphasized simplicity, deplored ostenatation and considerd labour a dignity as well. Gandhi emphasized deep sincerity in simplicity as opposed to simplified practice. For him you didn't need to be wealthy to live a life of consequence. I wonder what the Mahatma would say today when people walk around with the labels of their designer clothes on their foreheads to give a signal of their status. I re-read Gandhi often. His truths are not for all because they demand discipline and asceticism. He is my lovemark because he stands for the most exalted of truths in all spheres of living.

What can be for those who listen
Until quite recently I lived just outside of NYC... one of the things that helped me in September 2001 was thinking "What would Gandhi do?"... maybe an oversimplification, but thinking that, and wearing my peace dove, really helped me get through those dark days. Many years after his death, and very far away, he remains a symbol of what can be for those who listen.

He was my grandfather
He was my grandfather and taught me some very valuable lessons when I was 12 years old. The most profound lesson was understanding anger and channelling the energy into positive action. He said anger is like electricity - useful if used intelligently but deadly if abused. So anger should be used as intelligently as electricity. He asked me to write an anger journal not just to pour the anger out of my system but as a reminder to commit myself to finding a win-win solution. I did this, and still continue to, and it has helped me use my anger constructively instead of violently. I wish more people could learn this lesson so that violence could be reduced substantially.

An icon in my heart
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi - "father of the nation" - is always an icon in my heart from my childhood. His round thin framed spectacles and bald head. I think, in the present world, full of hatred, bitterness, cruelty, racial discrimination, communal riots, war, human degradation and erosion of values, Gandhi is more relevant today than at any other time. In the context of the present situation, I strongly feel that there is an imperative need to recapture the spirit and human touch of Gandhi. Gandhi is the greatest human lovemark India has ever contributed to the World.
