I think you are just supposed to laugh
I am not sure you are supposed to identify with the characters. I think you are just supposed to laugh. Which is good because it is so very funny.

It is brilliantly funny
Hahaha, I wouldn't say this film was heartwarming but it is brilliantly funny. The kind of stuff you'd like to think wouldn't make you laugh but does. Ah well, I wish I could dance like that.

I saw this painful movie
I saw this painful movie. Growing up as an outsider during the period this movie is set was nothing like this movie. I could not identify with it. The black and white short that this movie is based on is perfect. The director should have left well enough alone. Why this movie is even nominated to be a Lovemark is just plain silly. 6 months from now, people will have completely forgot about it and there will be stacks of this movie in the 99 cent movie bin at Walmart.

Being an outsider
This hilarious, poignant and heart-warming (yeah I said it) film captures the awkwardness of being an outsider, the joy of being accepted for who you are and the courage to live without care or concern for what others think. Oh, and it doesn't have Hugh Grant, Sandra Bullock or "the summer's most romantic comedy" anywhere near it.
