    • One whiff evokes memories of a lifetime

      Penhaligon's

      29 November 2005

Penhaligons may well have been granted Royal Warrants by Her Majesty Queen Alexandra in 1903, His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh in 1956 and, most recently, His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales in 1988. But for me, Penhaligons Blenheim Bouquet will always be the smell of my father. He has worn it all my life and one whiff evokes memories of a lifetime. He eeks out his dwindilling supply and, even when I renewed his stocks on my last trip to London, the precious liquid is still treaded like gold. Constant, restrained and ever so English - Penhaligons.

    • A beauty and serenity which will never fade

      Audrey Hepburn

      03 December 2005

Simply mesmerising - Audrey Hepburn posessed a beauty and serenity which will never fade. Thanks for the laughter and joy, drama and fun - thanks for the memories Audrey.

    • What awful coffee, what an awful concept

      Starbucks

      04 December 2005

They line up like zombies for less than average coffee served and made by those young enough to work for minimum wage. What awful coffee, what an awful concept. Head for a real cafe where coffee is an art not a cost centre. Support your local barista not a college kid under the Seattle thumb.

    • Don’t miss the opportunity to strike a little gold

      Crunchie

      04 July 2006

Life’s a whole long journey, boy, before you grow too old, don’t miss the opportunity to strike a little gold. Out West the folks are crossing you. The way to make them stop is to quick draw your Crunchie bar and fill them full of choc. Have a Crunchie Hokey pokey bar, Golden Crunchie Hokey pokey bar.

    • Fond memories of Napa

      Napa Valley

      19 March 2007

Grand plans to propose to my wife to be in the Grand Canyon went out the window on our visit to Napa Valley. Sitting at a vineyeard (Pine Ridge) under a fig tree sipping wine and having lunch in the California sun seemed as good a time as any to pop the question - the answer? YES. Fond memories of Napa will always remain. Easy to remember the engagement date too - that night we pulled into a restaurant for dinner when the news of Diana, Princess of Wales death was anounced.

    • A remarkable man

      Sir Edmund Hillary

      14 January 2008

The death of Sir Ed this past week prompted me to look him up on Lovemarks - what a shock to find he was not there! This mountain of a man who was the first to summit Mt Everest, drive a tractor to the South Pole, jetboat up the Ganges and many other adventures is a huge loss to New Zealand and the world. His true legacy is the charity works he quietly achieved in Nepal - schools, hospitals, roads, airfields all his doing. The only person ever to be granted honorary citizenship of Nepal. A remarkable man - Rest In Peace.

    • My late father loved this stuff

      Blu Tack

      17 October 2008

My late father loved this stuff. I swear to God that the house was and still is held together with it. Loose screw? BLU TACK! Hiding a key outside? BLU TACK! Stopping a hole? BLU TACK? Poster on the wall? BLU TACK! Cunning method to stop walking stick sliding when propped against wall? BLU TACK! Affixing the phone to the bench? BLU TACK! Damn stuff drove me crazy. I hate the stuff but Dad absolutely loved it.
