Moving from Canada to the United States has me whittling down my belongings to the barest of bare minimums. Naked, really. My love of stuff is weighed against the high cost to ship cross country and border. What makes the cut every time are those things that provide comfort, inspiration and strength. My favourite childhood book by Patti Stren, There’s a Rainbow in my Closet, tops the list.
It is a perfect story about a girl finding her spirit and expressing it confidently, about relishing the unique parts of herself, and about savouring inspirational relationships with others. The little purple-and-pen doodles throughout only make the book more wonderful; just looking at them manages to pull me out of a creative drought. I have my copy already tucked away in about ten layers of packaging material, set to inspire me for years to come in my new, less cluttered, home.
