Transcends his art
Pablo Picasso
16 May 2009
Perhaps the greatest Lovemark of the 20th century, Picasso's signature is worshipped the world over and transcends his art. It has joined with our cultural DNA, unconditionally accepted by each generation as the marker for sublime human artistic expression. When we struggle to understand his vision, his signature inspires faith that one day this painting or drawing will have significant meaning and equity in our lives.
Walt is my hero
Disney
04 June 2009
Walt is my hero. When I think of Walt, I think of him first as some sort of radical social engineer who champions the rights of children. Secondly, I think of him as the founding father of animation. When I experience the Magic Kingdom or a Disney Cruise, I can't help but wonder if Walt would have approved of current attractions or how different the company would be if he were still alive. He created an international sanctuary for children – a remarkable legacy. I do know he would not have approved of the latest generation Tiki Room.
Todd is god
Todd Rundgren
11 June 2009
Todd is god. Todd Rundgren is a 21st century Renaissance dude. His music has guided my creative development as an art director/designer my entire career. I met him once in Atlanta in a record store promoting digital music technology. Todd is one of those remarkable artists who drives the creative process, constantly reinventing his craft and guiding the music and computer/internet industries toward innovation. I consider him one of the founding fathers of modern pop/rock music and probably one of the greatest live/studio guitarists ever. POV is my favorite album featuring his band Utopia (1974 to 1985), In my mind, this theme album is the follow up to Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
Where did she come from?
Lady Gaga
12 June 2009
Who is she? Where did she come from? Does she pose a threat to national security? Why are the hooks in her songs so good? When I first heard "Just Dance" on the radio I went gaga and almost drove head-on into a semi. Then I saw her on American Idol playing piano which was even more confusing. I'm not even sure what she looks like. Does she really play p-p-poker? Is Lady Gaga a real person? Is Lady Gaga some sort of weird viral brand experiment. Help me.
Firmly grounded my creative process
Art Center College of Design
12 June 2009
I'm a graduate of the internationally acclaimed Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA, the modern incarnation of the Bauhaus, the legendary German art institute founded in1919. My Art Center experience firmly grounded my creative process in the principle of Modernism: form follows function. Art Center also gave me the opportunity to meet and learn from some of the leading creative visionaries of the 20th century including: Bernice Polifka, Saul Bass, Milton Glaser, David Hockney, Keith Haring, David Hundley, Vance Studley.
Legendary German institute of design
Bauhaus
12 June 2009
"Form follows function" or "transparency in design" was the guiding Modernist principle of the Arts and Crafts Movement and the Bauhaus, legendary German institute of design, founded by Walter Gropius in 1919. The Bauhaus faculty included the pre-eminent architects, artists, designers, craftsmen and typographers of the early 20th century who celebrated the mastery of craft while rejecting the thoughtless decoration characteristic of the Industrial Revolution. The Bauhaus was closed by the Nazi Party in 1933, forcing many instructors to emigrate to America further advancing the Institute's influence on world culture. Faculty included: Hannes Meyer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Hannes Meyer, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, and Josef Albers.
Absolutely brilliant
Gordon Ramsay
12 June 2009
One of my favorite television shows is Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares. He's one of the great chefs, a best-selling author, and one of the most successful restaurateurs. But the most remarkable quality about him for me is his ability to reinvent and successfully brand struggling businesses in a couple of days. For Ramsay, 21st century branding seems to be an innate instinct located near the fight or flight region of his brain stem. I hope I get the opportunity to work for him in some marketing capacity. He is absolutely brilliant.
Viva Twitter!
Twitter
17 June 2009
Viva Twitter! Wow, Iranian government censorship was thwarted by a simple social networking site. When all other media outlets had been closed down to hide the murder and political suppression of the Iranian people, Twitter was able to maintain a link to the outside world rallying international support and scrutiny. I award Twitter the John F. Kennedy U.S. Medal of Freedom for its role in helping to prevent the regime's hideous treatment of women, the systematic murder of homosexuals, its denial of the Holocaust, and its insurgent warfare against the defensive U.S. forces in Iraq. God bless the Iranian people–freedom is at hand.
One of the great super bands
Fleetwood Mac
18 June 2009
Bravo Howie. this is one of the great super bands from the golden age of 70's classic rock. What I love about bands from this period is their total creative commitment to the craft on every level, from lyrics to production and the staggering level of talent of each band member. Bands like the Beatles, the Eagles, The Doobie Brothers, Queen were incredible musicians and the best singer-songwriters of our generation. These bands often had 2 or 3 lead singers who contributed equally to the creative product. unfortunately, it's bad business to pool so much talent in one package when you could have 3 independent superstars.
Ice cream paradise
Lappert's Hawaii
21 June 2009
Not only is Kauai an island paradise, it is also the ice cream paradise of the world. Lappert's Hawaii Gourmet Ice Cream and Sorbet is hand-crafted in small batches using fresh, all-natural ingredients including pure cane sugar and tropical fruit purees. There is no equal. Banana Fudge is breathtaking. There is only one true Lappert's found only in the islands – don't be fooled by the fake West Coast chain. Aloha.
The caretaker of the Earth
World Wildlife Fund
21 June 2009
The largest multinational conservation effort, the WWF is present in 100 countries and is supported by over 5 million people globally. They promote science and sustainable practices in the use of natural resources and try to protect wildlife and environments necessary for everyone's survival. Essentially, WWF is the caretaker of the Earth.
Has a cult following
Original Tommy's Burger
25 August 2009
The original Tommy's World Famous Hamburgers has stood on the corner of Beverly and Rampart Boulevards in Los Angeles since 1946. The Chili-Cheeseburger has a cult following. I had to leave L.A. so I would stop eating them – at least I have my memories.
One of the greatest athletes
Jack Nicklaus
14 October 2009
Jack Nicklaus is one of the greatest athletes in modern history. His professional golf career encompasses 105 tournament victories and 18 major championship titles. A true citizen of the world, Mr. Nicklaus is the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Woodrow Wilson Award for Corporate Citizenship, and is co-founder, with his wife Barbara, of the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation which provides pediatric healthcare in 5 countries.
Home of the original double-decker cheeseburger
Bob's Big Boy
14 October 2009
Home of the original double-decker cheeseburger created by Bob Wian. The Bob's Big Boy Restaurant located at 4211 Riverside Drive in Burbank, California, was built in 1949 by local residents Scott MacDonald and Ward Albert. The historic building was designed by noted Los Angeles architect Wayne McAllister, inspiring the streamline freeform coffee shops of the 1950s. The Bob's Big Boy building represents a distinct architectural period in the history of Los Angeles known as Googie. Creative coffee shop designs started in Los Angeles and became a nationwide phenomenon as automobiles gained in popularity. The Riverside Drive Bob's Big Boy was one of the first drive-ins and featured carhops on roller skates. Bob Hope, Mickey Rooney, Debbie Reynolds, Jonathan Winters and the Beatles loved Bob's Big Boy. Amen.
Greatest of all time
The Beatles
04 December 2009
The first branded rock band and the greatest of all time.
One bite, now no longer in control
Voodoo Doughnut
21 March 2013
I took one bite and was no longer in control: Bacon Maple Bar is a raised yeast doughnut with maple frosting and bacon on top.
