      Ivory

      30 November 2008

The first time I was introduced to Ivory products, I was about 13 or 14 and going through a stack of my aunt's old Life magazines. Already well on my way to becoming a graphic designer, I loved looking at the old ads - what a blend of typography and illustration. The Ivory ads struck me mostly because of the women's expressions. They weren't hypercolored, or sexy, or had wide fake smiles like the beauty ads today. They just looked at ease, with themselves. Content and confident. A few years later someone told my mom that I had "skin like an Ivory girl". That sealed the deal - I've been buying their products since it was my turn to choose the soap for my own household. I adore the design of their body wash - the subtle indent of the bottle in the middle so it's easier to hold with wet hands, the hole at the top that lets out just the right amount of product, the lather, and of course the way it smells - pure and clean and simple.

    • Good enough for me

      Pabst beer

One Mardi Gras, a bunch of us college kids headed down to Erath, Louisiana, to stay at our friend's grandmother's camp. Most of us weren't picky about beer, but a few in the group were amateur beer connoisseurs. One of them opened the stocked refrigerator and studied the blue, red, and white boxes. "You know," he said, "My grandfather drank Pabst. If it was good enough for him, it's good enough for me."
