  I came to Mississippi University for Women, The W, in the fall of 1978. "Girl Power" was just a twinkle in Gloria Steinem's eye. There were no female U.S. Supreme Court Justices. No woman had ever had a real chance to be vice president much less president. It was a very different time. But all my life my father had taught me I could compete with the boys in everything. My heart was broken when he was killed in an industrial accident midway through my junior year in high school. I was the oldest of five children with a widowed mother and I HAD to make the right choice in picking a college. I did. The W became my staunchest supporter and reinforced the things Dad had taught me. Women were student body presidents and newspaper editors and the faculty was there to educate and empower women. It's been more than 25 years since graduation and still my best friends and much of my professional network are my W classmates. Returning to campus is the closest thing to time travel that I have personally experienced. A campus of timeless beauty with a mostly female student body and a place where girls become women and women become whatever they want to be. MUW is truly a Lovemark!

  I was a competitive swimmer and lifeguard but those days are behind me. However, I still always feel like a "real swimmer" when I put on my Speedo.
