    • A superb young talent

      Bear McCreary

      01 June 2007

I know Bear principally as a composer. The theme music from the Battlestar Gallactica series is his work. I enjoy his eclectic approach and his melding of classical, cultural and contemporary styles. (Just as, so too, I enjoy Jethro Tull for having done similarly in a different era). Bear is a superb young talent and approachable. I emailed him about the digderidoo and he took the trouble to listen to mp3 excerpts and comment. I admired his willingness to discourse with someone he didn’t know and ’experiment’.

    • An instrument and evocateur

You know how it is. You’ve come home late. You’re physically tired but the brain still has a spark. You grab a glass of something exquisite, slip the headphones on and allow Katie Noonan to speak to your soul. I didn’t want to separate Katie from the embrace of the band but I have to credit Katie with ’knowing’ her voice; knowing it as an instrument and evocateur. The band compose around her, and compose her, brilliantly.

    • House is brilliance

      House MD

      20 June 2007

House is brilliance between the spaces of the enigmatic.

    • An intimate kiss

      Giesen Wines

      17 July 2007

Please, allow the scenery, the rocks and stones, and water, the lush flora, the landscape of Marlborough New Zealand to infuse your palate. Sublime, cool, perfect. The Giesen Sauvignon Blanc - an intimate kiss with the grape.

    • Acknowledging our deep friendship with product

      Lovemark (The)

      09 September 2007

It seemed a natural progression to actually nominate the concept itself - for what other notion has generated so much thought about engagement with product and product evocation. What else has pulled us towards acknowledging our deep, daily friendship with product and allowed us to vocalise the consequent joy.

    • A musician's musician

      Peter Gabriel

      13 September 2007

Soon to be an officially recognised music icon, involved in humanitarian issues, honest about his fears and his craft, a musician’s musician and, dare I say, a man who has been incredibly sexy across the decades. In his eyes...

    • Gently inspire those seeking new hope

      The Salvation Army

      15 September 2007

The ’Salvos’ or ’Sallies’ play a significant role in the Australian community for their work in the general welfare domain. They truly are outstanding in terms of their non-denominational perspective. Their motto: "What we believe makes us who we are" serves to gently inspire those seeking new hope and new life.

    • Brilliant young performers

      Black Violin

      17 September 2007

Bringing sassy hip hop, classical, jazz and pop violin performance to a whole new generation. Brilliant young performers. Brilliant encouragement for high school music programs. Gloriously celebratory of the violin and of life's opportunities.

    • I love the earthy qualities

      Jethro Tull

      18 September 2007

I have repeatedly kept coming back to Tull’s music across my life. I love the earthy qualities, the poignant and sexy lyrics, being taken from medieval inn and field through to industrial nation and the fabulous flute playing of Ian Anderson. Jethro Tull were born while the earth was still hot: an era when musicians were often classically trained but boy did they know how to get the beat on.

    • A show I feel deep fondness for

      Play School

      18 September 2007

"There's a bear in there and a chair as well." I don't know any Aussie who can't break into this song and who doesn't instantly relate to the posing of: "Is it through the round window, the square window or the arch window?" I will never forget John Hamblin washing a doll in one classic scene. I treasure memories of many well known Australian actors being plain silly. It's a show I feel deep fondness for.

    • The essence of sensuality, mystery and intimacy

      Palin's Travels

      24 September 2007

Palin's Travels are the essence of sensuality, mystery and intimacy in both the travel sense and about the man himself. Palin brings humility and joy to the viewing, a sense of humour with sensitivity, drawing us into the magic and mystery of places not always found in the classic travel brochure. For me Palin's Travels are ethnography in action. Enjoyable exploration and mystery - leading me to wonder further about the man himself and his evident regard for humanity and culture; leading me to wonder what experience is just around the corner.

    • Simply loving the Swazi design

      Swazi

      24 September 2007

Firstly, I am simply loving the Swazi design and the rugged back-to-earth outdoors look swing back into its own. Davey Hughes is bringing a solid philosophy back on deck and taking fulsome advantage of the social swing back to the ’village’. He’s keeping it at home, in NZ also. All round this has to be a Lovemark.

    • Thumbs up

      Absolutely Fabulous

      26 September 2007

Great word group there Allison. Ladies (to date), I have to add my thumbs up re Ab Fab simply by way of the no apology outrageous ego centric scripts lived out so well via this show. The utterly shallow, vacuous, over indulgent, catered to types they depict, are merely caricatures of women we know and encounter. Meow?

    • This big, beautiful, old city

      Sydney, Australia

      26 September 2007

After 25 years in the country, I find myself living on the edge of the city. Yet, until this week, I have never been into the heart of the CBD. After an appointment ended on Elizabeth St, I turned the corner into Martin Place and walked up the pedestrian pathway and sat down on a bench and looked back. It was close to sunset and the stone of the old buildings held rich dark honey glows. Dropping away under my gaze were terraces of people walking. I suddenly felt this tremendous heart swell of pride and pleasure as I looked at the scene. This big, beautiful, old city.

    • Captures the thinking person

      National Geographic

      09 October 2007

Yvette, I love your Lovemark. You captured my own sense of NG. Quality and integrity and that oh-so-recognisable yellow rectangle that heralds content intended to capture the thinking person. That instant response to the yellow rectangle is indeed quite calming and positive. (I smiled at the "nudie" comment too.)  NG has always had stunning photography and that was what struck me as a child still too young to read the text - that the images themselves were stories and allowed me a window into sections of the globe. I felt I got to know some of my global neighbours in a way that no other magazine apart from NG offered.
