My first camera
My first camera, a Nikon D50 went to Iraq with me the day I purchased it. I paid for it at the camera shop and then it was straight to the airport to get on a plane to go back to Baghdad to finish my tour. In the remaining 9 months of my deployment, that camera saw over one hundred patrols and some ten thousand photos. Even for being a low end DSLR, it survived being stepped on, rattled around the back of a humvee and even an RPG attack. I'm not keeping the camera, but I know that my brother will give her a good home. My D1X has slid comfortably into the role of workhorse for me (10k photos and counting since August last year.) Yeah I love Nikon, since that's what I held as my first camera on my first deployment.

The creme de la creme
Nikon is the creme de la creme of the photographic world. Their cameras have always been leaders in design, functionality, form, aesthetics and most of all the brand is revered worldwide. My introduction to the design classic Nikon F1 was almost thirty years ago at art college. With a Nikon in your hands you feel like a professional photographer, it gives you confidence when composing a shot and you just know it will be perfect a beautiful photograph when printed.. The mere sight of the Nikon brand tells people you are serious about your art. The new era of digital photography and the need to develop new cutting edge technological products has posed new questions for the Nikon designers but they have responded with beautiful practical products for their legions of followers. Nikon have a long history of being in the vanguard of photography.

I'm just loving the sound of the shutter...
If you're into photography, you know there's an endless debate - Nikon vs Canon. Browsing photo forums where this is a topic is a quick lesson in how passionate people can be about brands, but also how really intangible and emotionally based their reasons can be. For me Nikon just 'feels' right. It's professional grade but rugged, gritty, street level. Right now, one of my staff is using mine in the office, and I'm just loving the sound of the shutter. Just another example of the importance of aesthetics across the entire range of our senses.

Makes you feel like a real photographer
I've used Digital SLRs and can't deny they take great pictures, are easy to use, in fact it's hard to get it wrong with them. But there's something about an older Nikon film camera that makes you feel like a real photgrapher. I started with an FM2 and now use an F3. It's a delight. I like the weight, the feel, the control, sturdiness, reliability and accuracy of that all knowing lightmeter. As someone else has said, it has real heritage. So many of our favourite photos were take with these great cameras. No matter how good digital becomes or already is (even Nikon digital), it'll never feel the same.

Almost endless pictures
My first digital camera, a Coolpix 4300 digital camera is now two years old. I have been successfully weaned off emulsion film after two regular Nikons. I'm actively encouraging my niece to do likewise. After sending her pictures of our trip to Disney World last April with our mutual niece, she has said she will be getting a Nikon soon. My 256 compact card allows me to take almost endless pictures in beautifully sharp resolution and with such ease. It's a snap to send my pictures to whomever within minutes with the included software. Oh, I dropped my 4300 from waist height, picked it up and it functions perfectly. What's there not to love about my Nikon? I'm working my way to getting a professional digital Nikon in the near future as 4.0 is only equivalent to 5x7 resolution.

Weird without it
My Nikon FE2 has hung around my neck for two cross-country road trips with my wife, documenting our times together. It has produced some of the most vibrant photos of my daughters for 12 years now. And with the advent of digital cameras, I just can't seem to pull myself away from it - even for a digital Nikon. I will never get rid of this camera, anyway, even if I do go digital. It has been a part of my life (there are very few photos of me floating around because I'm the photographer for all family functions) and I feel weird when I've not got it with me.
