  • The perfect cup of coffee

Peet’s was always owned by Alfred Peet. The Starbucks guys worked for him then started their own company copying the look and feel of Peet’s (with his permission). As Starbucks became a mega-corporation, Peet’s stayed local until a few years ago when Peet sold the company and it was taken public and started expanding. Alfred Peet is rumored to be working on the perfect cup of coffee in Emeryville.

  • The original

If you have done your research, Starbucks and Peet's coffee were once owned by the same company. Back in the late 70s and early 80s the two companies were operated by the same group of people, Starbucks in Seattle, and Peet's in San Francisco. The owner sold his portion of Starbucks to Schultz, and continued to operate Peets. Peets is the original, but Starbucks and Schultz brought cafe culture to the United States.

  • For the record

To clarify the Peet's situation: it was NOT Peet's that was bought by Starbucks last year, that would be SEATTLE's BEST COFFEE that Starbucks bought last year. (For the record!)

  • Each morning!

Such authentic quality in food and atmosphere. The smell of the coffee and the sight of the wood makes my heart jump every single day. It's like the birth canal into every day for me - I am re-born each morning!

  • The facts

Peet's actually was not bought by Starbucks a year ago. It did become a publicly sold and traded corporation with a nasdaq listing about a year ago. So while they may want to be Starbucks, for now they have seperate bank accounts. Just the facts, ma'am.

  • Not the same thing

Um, do you have a reference for that? I would really like to read about that. All I can find is that a co-founder of Starbucks is now on Peet's board, but that is not the same thing at all. Starbucks bought Seattle's Best, so could that be what you are thinking of?

  • That wonderful coffee!

Sure Peets is well-roasted, rich coffee. On the other hand, it was bought by Starbucks last year... so, that wonderful coffee that can be found everywhere in the world, no matter its name, is really, Starbucks after all.

  • It made me homesick

The best coffee in the world. Friends who moved back to Europe used to write and beg for Major Dickason's blend. It made me homesick for Berkely, but luckily it came to Boston. I'd go a mile out of my way to go to Peets.
