  • I did it, I got them, I'm happy

At 39 and a mum of 2, I walk past the Playstation skate park on my way to Portobello market. I’ve never been a skateboarder. I was too little in the 70’s to do anything but sit on one and roll down the middle of the road I lived on. Then I was too girly...then I was too past it! But the love connection’s alive and well. Something inside keeps telling me "you’re not a teenager anymore". But I did it anyway. Bought my first pair of Vans. It took me a couple of go’s but I finally plucked up the courage to buy my first pair a month ago. Size 5 1/2 White Prison Issue’s White. Surrounded by younger folk in the Carnaby street store I think I looked young’ish enough to pull it off. So I did it, I got them, I’m happy.

  • The only essential shoes

The only essential shoes. In this company’s history, I believe that they have created the perfect sneaker/skate shoe for almost any personality. Mine is the" Wally" (not "Wally 2" although that is also a fine shoe). I would probably be on my 9th pair had the company not discontinued them.

  • A convert or should that be Vans-vert?

Bought my first pair of Vans recently. I don't skateboard, but the yellow and black shoes are unlike anything else I've ever seen. Vans is all about attitude. The extra 'air' of laces is a nice touch.

  • Must always have a pair

Man I need Vans! That was the ad campaign in the late 70's and early 80's. (Ahhhhh the good old days) As a kid, whether I was racing BMX or skateboarding I had to have a pair of Vans. I will always own a pair of Vans!

  • And I've kept on loving 'em ...

I love Vans. I once had to hunt down a pair of Vans skate shoes hundreds of miles from my home when I was 15, just to be able to feel as if I could identify myself as a skateboarder. I also love them because of the first Vans ad I saw. It featured a drawing of a little old shoemaker sweating to hurriedly stitch up a pair for a skater in the background eager to go skate in them. I love 'em because my childhood heroes, Tony Alva and the rest of the Z-boys wore 'em. And I've kept on loving 'em because Van's have re-created the most awesome skate spot in the world, the 'Combi-Pool' from Pipeline Skate Park, in one of their indoor Skate Parks in California.
