  • Adorned by icons

Kangol has been making headwear in the UK for over 60 years, but I only recently discovered that. My first experience with the brand was as a young kid growing up in the inner-city of Minneapolis. At the time I was deeply entrenched in urban culture and when I was 9 years-old hip-hop was just starting to create a groundswell of buzz. As a youngster I had no concept of English fashion or brands in general, I just remember seeing rap stars like LL Cool J and Grand Master Flash wearing Kangols on album covers and posters. Being adorned by icons in this exciting and emerging culture gave the brand credibility and authenticity. To me the hats were symbols of a culture and community that I was a part of, a symbol of the diversity and creativity that surrounded me.

  • One of Hip Hop culture's forgotten Lovemarks

The famous Kangol is one of Hip Hop culture's forgotten Lovemarks. No other brand has ever hit me like this - with their own stylish take on the hat and cap. Initially produced for upper class golfers, soon Grand Master Flash was wearin' it, then it was quickly taken on by B-Boys, Graffiti Writers, Rappers, MC's & DJ's all over the globe. It has remained a symbol of their indifference to the rest of the mainstream, it's an integral part of the Hip-Hop code, and it's still in fashion.
