Wisdom, courage and indestructible spirit
I’ll never forget witnessing the extreme poverty of so many African people, and I’ll always admire them for their wisdom, courage and indestructible spirit. After reading why Bill & Melinda Gates gave the African Medical and Research Foundation the 2005 Gates Global Health Award, I was won over and became involved. People who come into contact with AMREF never forget it. AMREF is Africa’s best international NGO. It saves lives. It fights HIV/AIDS and malaria. It helps families. It trains health professionals and communities. It shares its health solutions around the world. The Flying Doctors began AMREF in 1957 using “the tools of their time”: a tiny plane that helped them save the lives of people who the world forgot about. AMREF is still an innovator – using aircraft, telecomm and telemedicine – but most of all it uses minds and hearts.
