Emmitt Smith is certainly an excellent running back, possibly even number 2. But Walter Payton is by far the top choice in this department. Payton was the epitome of the game, a once in a lifetime performer who truly exemplified the game of football.

An inspirational player
Emmitt Smith is the greatest running back of all time. Most touchdowns scored. Most yards gained. So that statistics are taken care of. He also plays with the most heart of any player in the league (with all due respect to Brett Favre), and that's a well-known fact to most commentators. I'll just cite the fact that he effectively single-handedly won a crucial game by playing the entire second half with a separated shoulder. An old-school player in a new-school league, he inspires respect and love for his commitment to nothing but the game and his personal objectives. He's often quoted as saying he'd give up any of his records for one more chance at the Superbowl. That's the way.
