Desperate for news
I was in the Middle East on business, staying in a very remote place without access to the Internet. A week into the trip, I'm desperate for news, something to connect me to my world. I speak no Arabic so the television stations are useless to me (no satellite dish). I step off a mini bus and walk into a tiny market and spot an English newspaper. I'm saved. For two weeks, I savor the daily reports from the Associated Press. It turned this tiny middle-of-nowhere rag into my local newspaper. The same middle-of-the-road news I can count on from the Web or radio in the U.S., I can soak up in an anonymous newspaper halfway around the world.

Wherever I am
The AP wire: It's immediate, it's as unbiased as the news comes. It's been around forever and it's not going anywhere. It's the same wherever you live. There are no opinions. In an age of big-media consolidation, with the NY Times owning the Boston Globe and the Chicago Tribune owning the LA Times, I know that wherever I am in the world, I can get the AP news from the local paper or the Web.
