  • Everyone has their own "Paul Newman" story

I live in Connecticut USA and Paul Newman and his wife Joanne Woodward lived nearby. He passed away a few weeks ago, and he was OUR Lovemark, specially, we like to think. He liked to live a normal homelife, so we did not hang around his home, helpless fans though we were. We all liked it that the famous Joanne Woodward was "Mrs. Newman" or "Joanne Newman" around town, helping in causes and theater, and minding her family with great love. Paul Newman, himself, would enjoy puttering about town, 'after something' , on some little errand, and if it came to a meeting with a fan, he was always friendly and gracious - so much so that everyone in the area has their own "Paul Newman" story and shared it again, with special love when he passed away. In fact, you will be entertained if you put "Paul Newman Story" in any good searchbox, because many have been lovely enough to share them in memory. He was very good-looking, right to the end, and won his "Mr. Cool" nickname, in the way he self-managed, right to the end. He excelled in his film skills, and he saved a respectable part of the world with his charities, which have grown, even more, in memoriam. Most of us can not be Paul Newman, and give and receive so much in life, but if we give as nicely and receive as happily and graciously, no matter how grand or humble , then the role of the icon is one that serves. He was Aquarius - an air and an energy, and his passing has only liberated his spirit, to help the rest of us, now that he is gone. Rest in peace and praise.

  • A master at the movie business

In the mid to late 80s, I was the Marketing Communications Manager for Allied Signal's auto racing program. I signed Paul to a contract to represent our brands, Fram, Bendix and Autolite in what was then the SCCA Bendix Trans Am Series. He and Jim Fitzgerald drove Nissan 300ZX race cars under the banner of Newman/Hass Racing. Paul introduced me to Clint Eastwood who came to see an event at Sears Point Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., and to Marsha Mason, who attended the Long Beach, Calif., Grand Prix one year. They were all very down to earth people who put their pants on just like all the rest of us, only they were able to pay $1,000 or more for a pair of pants. I remember Paul being furious with the media who came to races just to ask him about his movie career rather than his racing career. Still, he was fun, when you could get him to talk. He tended to be quiet and rather shy, often saying he was a jack of a few trades but master of none. I think he was a master at the movie business.

  • An abundance of pathos

In 1961, Paul Newman made one of the most memorable films to my mind: 'The Hustler' with Jackie Gleason. In it he plays the low ironic hero who wishes to win out at billiards over the unbeatable Fats Domino carnation in lapel and all. There is an abundance of pathos in his performance. It is an unforgettable one yet enacted with such ease. Newman is handsome as any man can get without being sued. Those piercing eyes of his speak whenever he does not. Newman stood for many progressive causes always in his thinking and was level headed. I so enjoyed him in 'Butch Casssidy and the Sundance Kid' because he was having so much fun. A great thespian and a greater man. Let those who are able follow his monumental example. We will miss you.

  • They certainly don't make 'em like Paul

He's a great actor, but also equally as talented as a philanthropist. His line of food stuff is tasty and the profits go to charity - and a huge bunch of the line is organic food, too. All in all, they certainly don't make 'em like Paul anymore.
