  • I don't know any place as magical

Oh Tanzania! The Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, Mt. Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar, Lake Victoria - I don't know any place as magical and mysterious as Tanzania. There's no other sky as beautiful and no other smell like that of the sand after fresh rains. I have such vivid impressions of the incredible people who I met in Tanzania -- mainly the Maasai, who live courageously and peacefully amid the world's most carnivorous creatures. When a traveler approaches them, they will ask for a lift to fetch water or smile with the deepest eyes you can imagine. Even with its many problems - health, poverty, education, and corruption, Tanzania - and the African continent - will survive.

  • It's all there in her genetic make-up

I know how bad things are in Tanzania, but my beloved African brown-headed parrot's parents were wild-caught from there. Every time I look into my parrot's eyes, I see the open skies and thick foliage and wildness of that country even though she's never seen her parents' native country, it's all there in her genetic make-up. But for circumstance, she would be flying and foraging in Tanzania's lands and watching the natives as they live their lives. She has brought a distant part of the world to me, and I thank the land of Tanzania for that.
