HMV
His Master's Voice, often abbreviated to HMV, is a famous trademark in the music business, and for many years was the name of a large record company. The name was coined in 1899 as the title of a painting of the dog Nipper listening to a wind-up gramophone.

An immortal brand
My first experiences of music at home was from 78 rpm vinyl records played on a wind up 'portable' gramophone which weighs about 6 kilos (I still have it!). I have such fond memories of changing the needles every few plays, taken from a little tin box emblazoned with the unforgettable image of Nipper, the little terrier looking into the gramophone trumpet with his ear cocked to the sound of his master's voice. Some of the records also featured Nipper on the label. How many hours I whiled away watching him spin around as he introduced me to the magical world of music. What an image, and what an immortal brand! My loyalty beyond reason to HMV's Nipper, for me he will always be associated with the greatest joy, next to love, in my life.
